Feeling overwhelmed? Try this technique.
So many of us are feeling all kinds of emotions right now with the current COVID-19 Pandemic. From happy, excited and even inspired; to exhausted, unmotivated, angry and hopeless. Can I just say, THIS IS TOTALLY NORMAL & COMPLETELY EXPECTED!!
However, these feelings can be overwhelming at times and so a great tool to have in your repertoire of coping skills is a simple grounding strategy using our 5 senses. It is simple and can be used in any environment to deal with any kind of emotion that may be hindering our ability to feel grounded in that present moment.
Using your 5 senses, you will name a number of objects. For example: 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell & 1 thing you can taste. This can be done in any order, and you can even challenge yourself with trying to think of 5 things you can smell or taste.
This allows us to give our minds a break from the excessive emotion and gives us an opportunity to feel centred and catch our breaths.
